GREAT FIRE IN NEW YORK

One of the Urgent fired known In New York for years took place there en April 20th. Beginning at Messrs Wiloox'a lard refinery, a baiidtog fire atoreyn high, tho conflagration spread to the adjoining warehouse, belouging to Mesara Rosslier and Skldmore. The flrnua thea leaped aoruaa a apaoa of nearly 100 feet to York's huge elevators, aDd thenoe the same distance to elevator B, oonsamlng all these m&Btlve build toga and their contents. A abed-covered pier, on which lay qoaßtitiea of Inward and outward bound European freight and some adjoining smaller buildings were alao destroyed. The flimee devoured everything within their grasp with awful fury, and for a time water waß used without effect; The storage wurohouae was filled with ooitoo, bairela of ale, aud general msrohandiae ; and there were 113,000 bushels of oats an 1 bat ley m tha elevators. The fire raged fur ously k for six hours, th > engines being unable to reach any accessible positron, but tboßs on the fire boats played upon ttie burning mass all night. Two of tue employees jumped from the burning rtfiuery and were killed. The coLflagration was witnessed by an enormous crowd.
