We do not remember any project being taken up so heartily throughout the Colony as the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition, which is to open m November m Dunedin, Every district is taking steps to have its peculiar advantages demonstrated to the visitors who will attend the Exhibition, and there is no doubt that the enterprise will be productive of great and lasting good to the whole Colony. It will make the different parts of the Colony better known to each other and to outside visitors, will promote settlement, stimulate manufactures, extend the markets for oar produce, and m many ways lead to the introduction and employment of capital The Ashbnrton district was early to take up the question of special representation at the show, and a committee was formed to carry out tbe desire of the distriot that a creditable display of produce, minerals, manufactures and arts should be made. Good support has been promised, and the Committee has already made considerable progress towards forming' the nucleus of a collection, whioh it is intended shall be placed m one or more bays of the Canterbury Court. Few districts stand more m need of advertising than Ashbnrton. Our resources are hidden from the view of the casual traveller, who sees from the railway for a considerable part,, of his journey through the county little else but an expanse of tussock sparsely sprinkled with sheep, and here and there a patch of grain or turnips struggling for existence. The fertile districts of Wakanui, Longbeach, and Springfield, are unknown. Onr wheat yields are scoffed at as existing only m our farmerß' imagination, and we are looked npon as unable to grow an apple. All these notions should be ctioycJlocl, - oticl xivnrr ia - tL<o-oppo-t— .»J*y. Let us not still further depreciate the reputation of the distriot by sending a meagre and paltry collection. We have the resources at command to make a display which will show the distriot m no unfavorable light m comparison with what people are fond of calling " the best districts m New Zealand," Let any one consider the many resources of the Ashburton county and then say where he can see a better district. Where can a man with any amount of capital be better suited with any kind of farm, and where is there a better field for many industries which might be named. Let those who have anything which they think will show what we grow or mako or find here communicate with the Com mittee, and let all show if only by a small contribution to the expenses that they have the welfare of the district at heart.
