ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL
The ordinary meeting of the Borough Oounoil was held last evening. Present : The Mayor and Councillors B. Friedlander, Scaly, Bird, Williamson, Scott, Tuoker, Eeir. An apology waa received for the absenoe of Or H. Friedlander. MAYOR'S STATEMENT. The Mayor said that the debit balanoe at the Bank was £1653 19a 4d. The amounts whioh had been reoeived sinoe last meeting were :— Bates, £21 6a ; cost of summons, 3a ; dog licenses, £3 10s ; Library aooount, 13s ; petroleum licenses, £3; Canterbury Fire Insurance Association, contribution, £70; rents reserves, £7. Total, £105 12a. Correspondence, Letters were read (1) From Aoting Secretary to Bailway Commissioners stating that Oounoil'B representation with regard to detention of evening train at Dromore would reoeive consideration. — (2) From Mr W. 0. Walker, M.H.8., on the same matter, and stating that he would give the Oounoil all the support m his power, — (3) From Mr J. G. Bescell, with relerenoe to Glasgow lease of reserve oooupied by him. — Beferred to the Reserves Committee. — (4) From Canterbury Fire Inauranoe Association fotwarding subeoription of £70 towards purohasa money of new steam fire engine.— (s) From Sir Jamea Heotor acknowledging receipt of information with regard to Ashburton Domain. I t BBPOBT3. The reports of the Engineer, and of the Fire Brigade Committee, whioh were of a formal nature, were adopted. STEAM FIRE ENGINE. The Mayor suggested to the Fire Brigade Committee that trials should be held with the new steam fire engine as soon as possible, so that allthoae who had to take part m working her ehotild be thoroughly conversant ' with their duties m case of a fire ooourring, On the motion of Or Scaly, the Fire Brigade Committee were instruoterl to take into consideration the matter of insuring the new engine, LICENSES. Petroleum licenses were issued to B. Aloorn, G. Jameson, and D. MoFarlane. PAYMENTS. Aooounta amounting . to £50 were passed for payment, and the Oounoil adjourned.
