THE CHARGES AGAINST VOLUNTEERS

Auckland, May 21. The oharges of laroeny preferred against local volunteers m connection with thi Easter enoampmsnt, were heard at thi Polioe Oourt to-day before Mr J. 8, Ollndon, B.M. William Thornton, i member of ihi Waltemate Naval Corps. was charged with having stolen a jar of brandy from Porter's Hotel, Mercer, oa the night of April 16, when the train whioh was proceeding to Hamilton with the volunteers stopped at Meroer. Mr Cotter appeared for tbe aooused; Thi evidenoe m the case went to show that thi j*r was stolen m the m4U» at the hotel, but a number of witnesses were called to show that Thornton had reoeived tbe jar from two other men, who had brought It to the train. The ease was, therefore, dismissed. William Oo.tello, Ooehant* Navals, and T, Butler, Waitemata NavaU. were oharged with the theft of an aoeordeon from Porter's Hotel, Mr Braosty, who appeared for the men, submitted that tbe instrument produced m Oourt was not Identified by the wltnesl for tha proseau* tlon, aud on this ground the prisoners tt> this oaae were also discharged.
