Madame Melba, the Australian singer, has made her debut m m the character of Ophelia.
Mr J. L. Toole, the comedian is inclined to visit Australia, but has not yet made up his mind.
Canon Farrar denies £that overtures have been made to him to accept the vacant Bishopric of Sydney. Sir J. Macdonald, Premier of Canada, is coming to England to consult the Government regarding the granting of subsidies to mail lines between Canada and Australia and Canada and Bogland.
The Rev Dr Hannay, speaking before a Conference of the Congregational Union m Birmingham, attributed the numerical inferiority of that body m Victoria to its laudable refusal to accept State endowment. The Union approved a suggestion from the Unions of Victoria and New South Wales that Congregationalists from all parts of the world should hold a Council io London, provided that on further enquiry it was found the idea of such a Council proved acceptable to the members.
