Captain Kane, of H.M.S, Calliope, in his report to Admiral Fairfax of the disaster at Samoa and his own escape from Bhipwreck states that whan steaming out of Apia in the teeth of the atorm t*e indicated horsepower was greater though engin e were eogines were "racing" than at the Calliope s trial atfull speedin smooth water. This speed was attribufabla to the coal used When tha fl 3et was in Welling* ton the various ship? took in a quantity of Westport coal, and the Herald also brought to vAncklanl 560 tons of it. which were distributed to tha ships of the flest then in port. The Calliope had Weßtport coal on board, coal whloh the engineer of H.M.S. Nelson regarded as " the best coal in the world, having 25 per cent more steaming power than JSewoistie," The, warships will exclusively nse Weatpoi«t coal when they can get it.
