The steamer Walnal, which arrived to-day from F ji, brings the following Items : — * Intelligence from Rambt with regaid to the effect of the recent hurricane shows the results to have been mo3t disastrous, i Ooooanot plantations which had r nly jcutf recovered from the hurricane of 1886, h»ve been bo severely damaged that there is little hope of a orop for another tbree years . The buildings withstood the foroe of the gale. The damage done at Rambi by the two harrioanes is estimated at £6000. The loss of bananas on Rewa appears to be greater than was at first anticipated. The flood has destroyed all those planted along the banks of the river, while one large plantation on the Walmanat has had about half of the cultivation completely submerged, The natives do not appear to be taking any aotive etepi as yet to dear away the debris left by tbe flood, and the neglected look of some of their plantations is very character lotlo* The Company proposed to be formed for the purpose of erecting and working the oil wells ia now an accomplished faot. The machinery is fast approaobiag completion, and the Company will shortly send' ont a representative authority to act on its b-balf. A very sad accident occurred on Friday night last. AMr Levy, well known In commercial olrolea and a very old resident m Fiji, had Bhown signs of aberration of intelleot and ' was arrested for his own protection. There being no speoial place of detention for such oases, tbe unfortunate man was of necessity taken to the gaol, where he was placed In a oell by himself. On Saturday morning be waa found dead.
