Three fires took p aoe la the city yesterday. The first, whioh broke oat at 2.30 a.m. | was m the premise* of Fanton a ud Go., hatters, Queen street, It was fortunately observed by the constable en the beat,, and extinguished before muoh damage was done. The second one occurred m a block of wooden buildings on the Karangahape road. It originated on the roof of the prerqlaeo of Qrqbb, baker, and was not suppressed till five shops and dwellings had been gutted. The premises destroyed are— Grubb'n, the Frc» m Moat Company's butohery, Tamer's (fralterer), Kelly's (grocer), and Andrews' (photographer). Branohman Andrew Bronnlgan, while on the verandah, was enveloped by flames and seflooa'y burnt about the baok and legs. His cloth on were burnt off him and his helmet shrivelled to ashes, Kelly's and AndrowA 1 premises beloqged to the New Zealand Insurance Company, and It la believed they were insured for £1000. Grubb'a otoolc was Insured for £125 m the New Zealand. Tamer w»s uninsured. The third fire, which oooarred at B.SO p.m., destroyed a cottage m Grundy street) owned and cooapled by Peroy Porter. lasqranoa unknown, Later.
