Auckland, February 20. The Premier wben here agreed to purchase, on behalf of the Government, the collection of Mr ftolsohek, the naturalist. It consists of seven groups of New Zealand birds In glass oases, a series of singlemonnted birds' skins, skeletons, eggs, corals, Maori carvings and mats. Probably the greater part of the collection will be taken to Wellington.

Wellington, February 20. A meeting of tobacconists was held this evening, when It was decided to establish a Tobacconists' Association, and take steps to prevent smuggling of tobacco, cigars and cigarettes, which la known to be carried on to a large extent In the city. It was also deotded to petition Parliament with a view of having tobacconist* licensed.

Nelson, February 20. A teqaisltlon was to night presented to Mr John Sharp, the present Mayor of Nelson, and who Bat m the House some thirteen years ago, requesting him to stand for Nelson city. Mr Sharp is complying, gave a brief exposition of his views. He i* an opponent of the present Government, ani la opposed to farther borrowing. He Is a freetrader, but would not again alter the tariff for a time, Mr Harknbss, who 0 ratested the Walmea-Pioton seat at last eieotlon, Is also being requisitioned, Dunbdin. February 20. A young boy, son of Mr Peter Shlels, Millar's Flat, was drowned m the Olutha River. He with two brothers were chasing a rabbit when the eldest fell Into the river, and the swift current swept him at once into the oantre of the river. The body has not been reonvarfld.
