HOW GORDON DIED

The M.hdl's despatch to " bis miserable Vail Karamella el-Sheikh." on April 28th, 1885, reporting tbe death of General Gordon (says the "Pali Mall Gazette") Is one, of the grimmest and most characteristic documents whioh have ever issued from the Soudan. The description of the cold-blooded massaore of fugitives who had sought to esoape by entering enclosure* and shutting tbe doors is worthy of the Arabs who fought under Mahommed and the early oallphs. *', They were mat faoe to face, and hewn with swords or stabbed with spears until their cries were terrible, and they were out to pieces at onoe there upon the ground, and then the troops of God fell upon the rest of the people who had shot the doors fearing the same fate, who were taken up and killed properly, and there were none left remaining of them but little obildren and free slaves."
