THERMAL ACTIVITY IN THE WAIOTAPU VALLEY
. « Dating from Rotorua on the 28th, a correspondent sends the following to tin "New Zealand Herald ":— A eudden thermal outburst on s email scale occurred In the Weiotapu Valley the other day. The trsok leading up to the bade of Kotore Kalramun (the new terrace forma* tioo), wlndi its way between a number of old craters. On this track, &ad clooo to the Terrace baiin, a solid mass of look was blown high np Into the air, followed by an immense sioape of steam, gases, and boiling mnddy water. The strange thing li that the old craten should have been avoided, and that it should have bnrst its way through a plaoe which offered the greatest resistance (as was the oase in the great Tarawera eruption), forcing its way through at least 15 feet of hard solid rook. Only two tourists have as yet seen it, and one was fortunate enough to witness one of its new periodical outbursts, which oocur at intervals of erery two or three hours
