ASHBURTON LIVE STOCK MARKET

Mr D. Thomas (late of JMatson Oox and Co) reports upon the Live Stook Market of the week ending January Bth, na follows :— On Tuesday at the Ashburton Yards I held my usual weekly sale of sheep, cattle, and pigs. This was the first sale of the season, and there was a large entry of bheep and cattle but farmers were evidently not posted up with regard to values of shorn Bheep, and a dragging sale resulted by auotion, maoy lines beiDg passed m leaving plenty of work for the salesman to do afterwards. There were, however, plenty of buyers and all but 2 lines of ewes and lambs were sold at satisfactory prices. The total number yarded for the day was 4886 sheep and 46 oattle of which I sold 8200 sheep and 30 head of cattle at the following prioes : — merino wethers, m the wool, 7a Id; cull lambs, Is Id; rams, 2s 6d. A poor line of merino ewes and lambs, 28 6d all counting ; orossbred 4-tooth ewes and wethers, 9s ; cull 2-tooth ewes and wethere, 7a ; ewes and wethers 2-tooth, 8s 3d to 89 8d ; crossbred hoggetts, 7s Id to 8s 6d ; merino eweß, 3s 6d ; crossbred wethera, 93 6d In oattle, fat oowe, £4 10a to £4 12a 6d ; fat heifers, £8 15s to £4 17a 6d ; store steers and heifers, £3 to £3 10a.
