THE SOUDAN WAR
(PER FBBSS ASSOCIATION.) Suakiat. December 30. Handoub has been reconnoitred, but none of the enemy were visible, and it is believed the dervishes have retreated. London, January 1. It is rumored that Emiu Bey has reached Victoria Kyanza, the deposition of Mwanga, King of Uganda, having opened the line of retreat. Emm is supposed to be awaiting Stanley on the i shores of the Lake, StJAKIM. January 1. A Greek who has reached this town from the Upper Nile reports that when he left Khartoum the Mahdi intended to abandon the attempt to conquer the equatorial provinces of Africa. A Greek who left Khartoum two months ago says nothing had then been heard of the alleged capture of Emm Bey by the Mahdi's forces. (Received January 2, 1230 p.m.) Suakim, January 1. Sir F. W. Grenfell has entered Handoub and has published a proclamation announcing the defeat of Osman Digna. Many tribes have assured the general of their loyalty to the British.
