ALLEGED BRIBERY. DEFEAT OF THE GOVERNMENT

Sydney. December 14. An exciting debate took place m the Assembly last night on the question of leasing the city tramways. Mr John Haynes, member for Mudgee, stated that Huntley, auctioneer, one of the promoters of the Company m the leasing of the tramways offered him £1000 and 1500 Bhares m the Company if he would vote m favor of leasing the property. Mr Wall, the member for Mud gee, said Lo had been informed that shares were reserved for ether members «vho should rote for the proposal. On the motion of the Premier Mr Hqntley, who was present, was summoned to the bar of the House, and Upon being called upon to make an explanation, said the statement made by Mr H&ynes was a pure fabrication. .The debate was thereupon resumed, and upon a division the proposal to lease the tramwajs was negatived by 56 to 28. Government hold a Cabinet meeting on Monday to consider what action they shall take, m view of their defeat last night, on the proposal to lease the tramways.
