THE GOLD ROOM AT WINDSOR

♦ : — In Windsor Castle there is one apartment called "The Gold Koora." In that room tho gold plate Is valued at £2,500,000. Muoh of this plate is only silver gilt. A good part, however, is of solid gold, und £2,500,000 is the estimated value of the whole, whether I the material is gold or silver. It ie said to be an irksoire thine; to get out and lay the plate for a State dinner, bo enormous is the weight. It ib handled und placed by the royal pages, some of whom have been over 50 years m service Cne salver m the " Gold Room " is of immense size (sft m diameter) and was made from the gold snuff boxes alone of George IV , } — those preeented to him by various cities and towns, the lids and inscriptions curiously preserved on the fcurface m a kind of mosaic gold, and this salver is valued at £10,000. Among other curious articles there Is a dinner service of silver, presented to Queen Victoria's ancle, William IV., «reen be was Dnke of Clarence, the donors being the merchants of Liverpool, In reward for royal serv cc rendered to them by his advoosoy of the slave trade. A candelabrum of gold, to bd used for lighting the dinner table, which Is among the plate at Windsor, Is so heavy that two strong men are required to lift it. Its value Is £10,000 There are 140 dcaen of gold Üblo and te& spoons, of six different patterns, and golden plates of various sizes sufficient to dine 250 penonc.
