Blake, the new Governor of Queensland, had been unpopular m the Bahamas, and that his term m Newfoundland had not been a success. The rapidity of his promotion was attributed by speakers to family influence and not to personal merits or ability. Mr Archer, Agent-General of Queensland^ replying to the Secretary of State, pointed out that m case of a national nominee being objectionable to the people of the colony he had been withdrawn, and expressed himself hopeful that this precedent would lead to cancelling Sir H. A. Blake's appointment. The « Standard," m an article on the subject, says: — While it is impossible f<* the Colonial Office' to delegate its responsibility, there is no reason for refusing to consult the Government of the colony, as proposed by Sir Thomas Mcllwraitb. This plan is habituallj followed m appointing Ambassadors to Foreign Powers, and much" stronger reasons exist for taking the same course with regard to the colonies. London, November 11. The "Pall Mall Gazette," m the conree of an article on the Queensland Governorship, says that because Queensland enjoys responsible Government that is no reason why the Colonial Offie should not 'listen to advice.
