PIGS.

Snoh a collection of pigs as thoae on the ground yesterday has never before been seen m Aahbarton, and it h«s very seldom been surpassed anywhere m the colonlos. More abnormally developed an'mals have often been Been, bat the chief points m yesterday's exhibits were their parity of breeding, their high quality, and their perfect suitableness for the production of 'that class of pigs which ia most m request for bacon purposes. There are few farmers m this district who do not keep pi go, and this section w>a one of tuft most intareaiing of the whole show.- The ficst three sties were occupied by brothers, splandid bo&ra sired by Mr T, Olarkson's famous boar Nugget, and one of these, owned by Me J. Q. Restell, gained the 'first pr!z*. He was a beautifully proportioned pig and m good condition. Figs of thfa family fetohed tho highest prioen at the Bales held m Melbourne during the Agricultural Show week, as high bb 42 guineas bqlng realised for a brother to Messrs Chapman Broi exhibit, Biddy 11. (by Mr Rosters boar), Messrs D'Auvergne Bros shewed the pigs with wbioh they achieved io great a success at the Timaru Show this week, and they were no less successful here, though they were closely pressed by Mr Thoa. Olarkaon's pigs, which wore of the same strain of blood, and which were ia no material point inferior. The scale appeared to have been turned against the latter by their having a few whita hairs more than the Banglora representatives. Mr James Rowe, of Chrißtohuroh, took first pr/ze for sow under twelve months old with one of Messrs D'Auvergae's breeding, a ?ery pretty bow ; and In the Small Yorkshire breed, whioh Is now In great favor, he swept the board, being responsible for all but two of the entries. White pigi are hardly so taking to the eye as bhok oneß, but Mr Bowo'a were m a noli excellent oondttlon and quality as to ooromand universal admiration. There can be no doubt that the pig, taking one year with another, does a, great deal towards paying the rent, and no description of live stook gives the same return for capital invested, as- well-bred and w ell-fed pigs. The "other breeds" inoluded a large Yorkshire shewn by Mr J. Stringf allow, and some others. Some nioe litters were also shown.
