CAPTURE OF THE ESCAPED MAORI.

They reached Kaupakl Pah early m the afternoon and made enquiries among the Maoris who denied having seen the fugitive. They w.ere jost about to leave the village whoa they mw two Maorln oomlng down the hill, one of whom they reoognieoS as the osoaped prisoner. When about 200 yards off he recognised them and run along the Governor's Bay road. They gave ohaae with a Maori named Mo Ho, The fugitive finding they were gaining stopped and picked up two large atones and threw them at MoOormaok, missing him. MeCormaok closed with Mare who struggled fiercely making his teeth almost meet m the oonitable's iett oheek. Drake and Mo Mo came to his assistance and the prisoner was overpowered. Five silk handkerohlefa and a quantity of tobftcoo and 22i id Id cash were fonnd on him. He wore a coat, tromero and hat which were Identified bb having been taken from Harvey and Palmer's ahop. He stated he had gone to Papanul on the morning of bis escape. On last Monday week he went to Papanul where he had dinner at the hotel. He then went to Kalapol and ! hid In the bush there till Thursday , when he returned to Ohristohurch and hid for a week, sleeping with a Ohinaman. He denied having been In Lyttelton.
