Thursday's Ohrlatchuroh "Telegraph" has the following : — Rumor has been current for some days* past that In consequence of the escape of Jonathan Roberts from custody m Lyttelton, there were to be onrtain redactions made In the heads of department of thla gaol. Yesterday evening the news was definitely confirmed, and those who are to suffer for the gaol breaker's escapade are Mr B L. O'Brien, tbe governor of the gaol, and Mr T. Bell, the bead warder In charge of the party of prisoners at work on the Island. The neira that tbe governor of the gaol ia to be removed to Hokltika was at once felt m Lyttelton as being of a great loss of the community. Mr O'Brien has been Esooolated with prisons m England as « chief for many years, and prior to coming here was governor of the Auckland gaol. He has been In charge of the Lyttelton gaol for the last six years. He is.said to have been very popular with tbe people of Lyttelton, and the reault of his suddon removal Is that a rrqulsitlon is m hand, to be forwarded to the Government, praying for his retention at Lyttelton. A public meeting is announoed for to-morrow night to oonaider |the matter.
