THE FRENCH COLONIES.
The French Admiralty has just issued an abstract of the population, area, and trade of the French colonioß. The following table is a complete list of the French possessions m Asia :— Tonquin, Annam, Cambodia, Cochin China ; population, 18,000,000 ; area m sqnare miles, 199,000 Indian settlements : Population, 275 000 ; \ area, 1J)8 equare miles. In Africa : Reunion, 180,000 ; area, 975 square mi'ea ; Diego, 3000, unsurveyed ; Mayotte, 10,000, 131 square miles; Comoros, 53,400, 608 square miles ; Obock, 22 000, 4210 square miles ; Senegal and Dependencies, 3,000,000, 314,000 square miles ; Gougo and Gaboon (no c«nm6), area, 234,000 square miles. In America there is Martinique, 70,000, 375 eqnare miles ; Guadeloupe and Dependencies, 50,000 75:9 sqa»re miles ; Guiana, 26,500, 47,000 square miles ; St Pierre and Miqueloa, 6300, 88 tquare miles; Oceania, Tahiti, and Dependencies, 57,000, 7800 square miles ; Wallis, 3fioo, unaurveyed ; Fortana, no information ; New Hebrides (joint Protectorate), 64,000, 5000 square wile g. The most valuable colonies are Martinique and Guadeloupe m the West Indies, which send tp France £680,000 worth of merchandise. Indigb comes next, exporting to France coffee, pepper, hides, etc., to the amount of £640,000. Senegal supplies birds, feathers, india-rubbnr, and fruit to the value of £560,000. Reunion exports £400,000 worth of sugar, vanilla, etc, ard, Uniana £200,000 worth of gold, feathers, and cocoa. French imports from 'other colonies amount to an aggregate value of £323,000. Algeria and Tunis being regard od as extensions of France are not included m this ist. The French colonies' total import and export trade with all the countries amounts to £19,000,000 sterling.
