SHOCKS AND BOOMING NOISES AT HANMER PLAINS. Yesterday's "Telegraph" contains the following deepatoh from Ita correspondent st Oulverden :— On Friday morning about 10.30 a.m. a emarfc shock of earthquake, with a preceding aoate explosive noise, was felt, and about an hour afterwards a mnoh heavier shock, without any preceding noise. Several sl'ghk shocks were felt during the afternoon and evening. On Friday nfght the moßt alarming noises were heard by ran dents on different parts of the plains, and at 11.30 p.m the heaviest ahrok experienced slnoe Saturday, the Ist September, todk pfaoe. This shock was followed by a largo number of smaller shocks, and the booming noises ware very frequent. Over twenty-five i land booms were ooanted within one hour of the 11.30 p.m. Bbock. Several snooks wore felt daring Saturday, and some damage has been done to buildings on the outskirts of the Hanmer Plaina, which heretofore have ercaped. The oht'mueys at St James's have been wrecked, both above the roof and below it, and some internal damage sustained. At Jack's Pass a new concrete ohimney is reported oracked. At Sc Helens soma damage was done to the newly-plastered walla, and Mr Low, findlrg *,hat the disturbances still continue, fs match-lining the. na.ll* of the prlnoipal rooms. The new ohimneys at Bt Helens, were aot affected by the heavy shooka of the !a B t forty eight hours
