ASHBURTON ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY

The annual meeting of the Ashbarton Acclimatisation Society was held yester. day afteraoon at Mr W. Zj'nder'a rooms. There was a fair attendance of members, and Mr Walker was In the chair. The report of the Committee which was adopted ttated amongst other things, that although the Society had oaly been formed a year, It had worked very well. Noth. withstanding the expense of forming the Soolety, the first year waa completed with a credit balance. The Soolety had distributed 2750 fontinalis or Amerloan oharr m the Wakanul and Longbeich oreeks and Ashburton river. They had also distributed 10,QOQ brown tront In the river between Westerfield and the proteotlon works. Only one oaso of poaching had been proved and the offender punished, but owlog to the exertions of the ranger poaching had jbeen considerably deminished m thediatriot,

The following gentleman were elected officers :— Presldont, Mr W. 0; Walker; Vice-Prealdents, Messra W, S. Peter and P. T. Mayo ; Treasurer, Mr E. G. Orisp j [Secretary, Mr J. J, 0. Qaane; Committee, Messrs W. F. Somervllle, D. Moore, Jas. Jamlf sin, Jos. Stephana and A, H. Shury. Mr Shury gave notice that he wonld move a resolution that next year the season should open on 19th September. It was stated that In September the Ashburton Is In first rate order for fishing and that fish have been taken as early as August In good condition, and that the river was generally unßt for fishing from the middle of October to about 16th November whilst snow was melting off the hills. It was urged that If the river was found unaultablo no fiihlng wonld be done and that it would be as well to avail of the usual fine state of the river during September,

It was resolved (hat after costs of conviction were paid all fines levied' on peraoDs caught poaching should be piid over to the ranger. A Bno-Oommittee consisting of Meßsrn Crisp and Shury were deputed to see Messra Barnard and Hunt ab to renting their water for the benefit of members of the Society. The lioensei will be ready for Issue on Saturday 29th Sep(euiher and oan be obtained from the Secretary or members of Committee. The meeting was closed with a VQte of thinks to the obalc.
