RINK DE PARIS

FANCY DRESS CARNIVAL.

Our enterprising townsman Mr Robert Elston, the proprietor of the Rink de Paris, may be heartily congratulated npon the saocess which attended the Fancy Drees Carnival and Maypole Dance last evening. The building" ia admirably Butted for the purpose, being lofty and well-venfi'ated and the floor unexceptlonably good. Last night the ball waa brilliantly lit up,and the walls and wi idonreoeeses were decorated very tnstefully with flags, and foliage from the Alford bush, the delicate traoery of the rats and the plume-like fronds of the tree-fern being employed with much artistic skill and excellent effect. The seating accommodation, provided for the visitors of whom there were a goodly number, was comfortable and wellarranged, everyone present commanding an uninterrupted view, while the strains of the Ashburton Volunteer Band greatly heightened the enjoyment of all present. Shortly after the advertised hoar the proceedings were opened by a Grand Maroh led off by Mies Clark and Mr R. BlstoD, m the oonree of which some very graceful evolutions were performed on the skates by from twenty to thirty of Mr Elaton'a pupils, whoso fancy costumes made up a very pretty coup d'ceil Following are some of the most noticeable dresses :— Ladies : MiasPermaln, yachting costume ; Miss Grnbb, Yum Yum j Miss Elston, La Fille de Madame Angot ; Mss Manning, May Q ieen ; Miss Campbell, Columbine ; Misa Ada EUtoa, Bulgarian Maiden ; Miss H. Morris, Flower Girl ; Miss A. Clark, Nancy Lee ; Mlbb Florence Elaton,Baty Coquette ; Mlsa J. Campbell, Red Cross Nurse ; Miss E. Clark, Mlaa E. Byrne, and Miaa Leeson, Sailor Lasses. Gentlemen ; Mr T. Scott, Spanish Prince ] Mr R. Grubb, Frenoh Cook j Mr G, Arthur, Ah JEee, a Oelest ! al ; Mr R B. Reatell, waggoner; Mr H. Bates, Hans the Bea l man ; Mr R. Elston, r'nklng uniform ; Mr J M. Wilkle, Prlnod ; Mr R, Steel, Pirate ; Master H. Curtis, Brigand chief ; Matter J, F. Elaton, French drummer boy ; Master S. Williams, shepherd boy j Master Clark, football costume j Master G Prlohard, Oadet uniform ; Master A. Wilkte, Spanish oadet ; Master R, . Horaereham, sailor boy ; Master W. Elston, naval uniform. The evolutlot s connected frith tho grand maroh concluded, the miypole was set up m the ndd tof the fl>or, and sorraounted by a gilded crown m the midst of fern-fronds and festoned with gay ribbons of red, white, and blue, hod a very pretty effecb. This was heightened as the preformorß glided to their plaoes around the polo and stood ready for the signal to begin, thoao who took p&rt being Mlaaoa Manning, (lead), Arthur, Morris, E. Elalon, A. Elaton, and Campbell, and Masters Prichard, Curtis, Arthur, Elston, Wllkie aDd Clark. The Usual evolutions of a maypole danoe were very prettily preformed, there being only one or two trifling hitches towards the larat caused by one of the spectators very foolishly and improperly interfering by mimicking the oonduotor\whiatle, a prooeediog which Mr Elston justly complained of. Altogether tbe affair was a great suooeaa and Mr Elaton and the performers all came In for hearty and welldeaerved applause.
