FLEMINGTON CHEESE AND BUTTER FACTORY
The first annual general meeting of shareholders In the Flemlngton Cheese, Butter and Bacon Faotory was held at Flemlngton school on Wednesday evenIng. There was a moderate attendance and the Chairman of Directors, Mr J. 0. I. Orlgg, presided* Tbe account] of the year's working showed a credit balance £50 Gs Od. The report stated that during the year 98,533 gallons of milk bad been bought from shareholders, at tbe prloe of 2£i a gallon of 101 b. From this, within lib of 40 tons of Cheddar obeese had been manufactured. Of the oheese 20 tons had been shipped to London, and the balance sold locally. That sold m London averaged 45s per owt. The Chairman In moving the adoption of the report, said that tbe result of the first year's operations, though small, was not altogether disappointing, but the smallneßß of the price paid for the milk, and the narrow margin of profit, were due to the heavy Initial expenses .inseparable from the starting of a new Company. These oharges were not likely to recur, and the shareholders might look for better results m future. It would be seen by the accounts that these expenses amounted to fd per gallon of milk. Another oause of tbe small profit was the laok of support given to the Company. Double the quantity of milk could have been dealt with for the same amonnt of working expenses. Tbe small quantity of cheese made had, therefore, to pay for everything, and the proportion of working expenses was consequently heavy. A shareholder had said that his return per oow was £3 13s. This compared favorably with the estimate laid before the shareholders of the Tai Tapu Daisy Factory Company the other day, which was £2 12b 6d per oow. Mistakes bad also been made during the past season, which would not oonrr Sgain. Oheeße had been held too long. An expert travelling the oolony had said twenty-one days, but this Company had bold for three taontbajsefore shipping. The cheese had been made a little too iitrong In flavor for the London market, and had alao to meet the competition of American makes, whtob at the time were flooding the market, Thiß would be remedied In future by com* tnenolng the operations sooner, and shipping the obeese In a younger stage. Next season It was hoped that the Company would be able t° make monthly progress payments to the suppliers of milk. The Pig Account showed a large profit. The Company had not gone In foe baoon outiag, but had sold the pork at top market price. The report and balaupe-ebeet were adopted. The retiring Directors, Mr W. Anderson (Flemington), and Mr Hagh Gallon WHlowby) were re-cleoted, end Mr George Jameson was ro-eleoted auditor. A vote of thßnka to the Dlreotors t9rminated the proceedings. At a rreeting of Dlreotors held subee* qaently, Mr J. 0. N. Grlgg was re-elected Chairman, and Mr T. Cox of the Walreka Dairy Faotory, North Otago, was appointed manager.
