+ The soolal gathering held by the Ash-, burton Fire Brigade last evening was a great buoocsb. There was a large attendance, and the Comm'tfcee of Management had arranged a very good programme Indeed. Perbapa the principal feature of the evening was the presentation to Foreman J. EUfford, of a silver medal, to whioh he haa became entitled by reason of his five yeara' service In the Brigade. Tho presentation was made by the Mayoress, Mrs A. Harrlaon, who, m pinniug the medal to the recipient's breast expressed the pleasure which she felt In making the presentation, and fell) felt called on to utter a word of pralsa for tin nosalflsh dn'.y psrformed by Fireman Hefford, and she was pleased to nolioo the high estimation m whioh he was held by hia couiradeß. The Mayor aIBO made a brief speech, alluding to the servloes rendered by Mr Hefford during his connection with the brigade. Hearty cheers were given for Mra Harrison, for Fireman Htfford, and for the Mtyor. The programme which was gone through was a very enjoyable one. Mr Peter Willlamß contributed a Bong which was muoh enjoyed. Mr Gallic danced a Highland Fling m oxoallent style, while a gentleman arrayed m the orthodox oostum? of his Sataoio Majesty — horns, tail and all — regaled the audience with a hornpipe, mush to the terror of the juveniles. Me Lyons danoed a sailor's hornpipe excellently, and Messrs R. Oallen and W, Matthews were encored fur a negro aong and dance, In costume. Me Simpson sang a song, which was loudly applauded, and the Boaelle Broa gave a performance on the trapvz*, whioh evoked long and hearty applause, and which would not suffer m comparison with the loudly-belauded efforts of professionals The Lagmhor Highlanders contributed a reel m their usual good style, and Mr Gallic danced a Beantreua. Mr Brooks sang a comic soog excellently, and was loudly applauded. . Dance music was provided by Messrs H- Gates, Ward, Mayo, and U. Hoakeu, while Messrs A. McKay and Stevens played the bagpipes when requited.
