CARRIAGE OF FISH AND GAME.
In the Rouse on July 6'h, Major Steward asked the Minister for Public Works. Whether he will take into consideration the advisablenees of arranging that parcels of fish and game may be sent at a small charge by railway from any station to any station, instead of being subjected to the preßeut prohibitive mileage ra'es? Be might Bay that it had bsen represented to him that these charges were at present too high. IJe wag under the impression, however, that the information which had been supplied to him was nut Btrictly accurate, and therefore ho hoped the honorable gentleman, m anßwerfng the question, would inform the House us to what wore the facia of the caae. Air Mitchelson enid the question wbb a-ked under a misapprehension of tha facts. The parcels rates v ere not exactly mileage rate?, and they wore not prohibitive. Parcola of 3b were carried 500 miles for 6d, and 71b pnrcels for Is. A brace of quail could be Bent frorp Bwunui to the Bluff for 6d ; a pheasant or a large trout ooald be sent from Wakatipu to Christchurch for Is. For such thiogs these rates were not prohibit've, even as small paroelß. When m large parcels, 112 b nvght be Bent 100 mileß for 4s — v der £d a pound ; thus, a pheasant wivghiug 41b would cost 2d to send 100 miles at parcels rates if m a hundredweight lot Offish, when sent at goods rates, 1121 b could be sent 100 milea for 2 8d game, 1121 b, 100 rattes for 4a. So that, seeing that the rates at present were bo low, there was really no necessity for the Government to reconsider this qaestion.
