♦ The Hod Me Lvrnaoh, m replying to the toast of his health at the banquet which was flvea to him. satd he was leaving !New Z island m order to fiod aotne field for his energies, because his nature vmb euoh that if he- lived »t ease he w uld aoon go into decay. If Victoria bad not offered much inducements he would have gone to Booth America. Whilst he felt sorry that things had become bo stagnant m tbia colony as to compel him to form his conoloslon and seek pastures new, he thought the time was not far distant wheb a very different state of things would prevail Some people mada oat the depression to be worse than it was. If men would buckle np and get over that feeling — uiade up their winds tht>t they were m one of the grandest oountries m the world and go together ahonlder to shonlder — they would very soon make a different country of New Zealand In going to Melbourne he would not be cutting his acquaintance m New Zealand. In fact he believed he would rather strengthen it. because he would be able to do much more good for the colony m Victoria than by remaining here. Whenever he could be of use m New Zealand it would off jrd him the greatest pleasure to offjr any assistance that lay m hla power. It was not hlB intention to give up his seat during the present Parliament.— (Applause ) He might mention th»t many of his strongest supporters amongst his constituents had not only approved hla intention to retain It this Parliament, but had also Bald that If he would only consent to allow himself to be nominated fora further term and pro* mhe to attend the Assembly year by year they would pat him into hla seat again — (Renewed cheers.) He could not say how r»r ho would go m that direction, but he Intended to bo present; at overy session of the present Parliament.
