THE PLENARY COUNCIL'S DECREE.
In reference to the Decree promulgated by the Roman Catholic Plenary Council at Sjdney, m reference to the sacrament being refused to Catholic parents who send their children to secular schools we have good cause to suspect that the information is not exactly correct m the form m which we have received it. It is not to be expected that the Catholics m country districts should be shut out from the benefit of the Government schools because of their secular teaching. What the decree means is this : The Catholics m large towns, and even here m Ashburton, have schools conducted under their own supervision where education is given free of cost to Catholic children. Parents who ihaye a chance to avail themselves of these schools, and do not utilise them are subject to the Decree. Where no Catholic free schools are established it is hardly likely the Decree would be enforced. Until, however, the full nature of the Decree is known here, it is not necessary to discuss the question on the bare notice we have received re* specting the matter.
