The Ashburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit. TUESDAY, AUGUST 21, 1888. ASHBURTON HIGH SCHOOL.

From the reports presented to the House on the subject of Secondary Schools, we find that the Ashburton High School is fulfilling to some extent its mission. The Inspector General says of it on 30th September : — " Great changes have taken place since last year. Instead of two masters m the boys 1 * school and one teacher m the girls' school, helped by both masters, there are now two teachers m the girls' school, and one master m sole charge of the boys'. It is, of course, very difficult to do full justice to all the classes of two schools with such a small staff, but good work is being done," This is certainly short, but there is the proverbial following of sweetness about it. From the figures given, it appears that the current income from reserves for the year ended December 31st, 1887, was £502 8s Id ; school fees, £227 15s 2d; books, etb , sold and other refunds, £21 18s 7d, and a dr. balance at the end of the year of £504 5s 6d. Total receipts £1256 7s 4d. On the expenditure EJde are placed : dr. balance at beginning of year, £460 Is 4d ; teachers' salaries and allowances, £596 13s 4d ; prizes, £7; printing, advertising and stationery, £26 1 7s1fd ; cleaning fuel and light, etc., £38 2s ; books and stationery account, and other temporary advances, £40 16s ; fencing, repairs, etc., £38 7s 8d ; rents, insurance, taxes, £2 12s ; bank charges, interest, etc., £45 17s 6d; total, £1256 7s 4d. The scholarships held at the school during the last quarter of the year are given;— School, free education and books, 7. The work of the highest and lowest classes comprises within its limits, the higher school courses and seems to be varied and extensive.
