NEW SOUTH WALES.
Sydney, August 16. The "Daily Telegraph," in the course of an article this morning on the San Francisco mail service, points out that, while tbe service is valueless as a European mail service, so far as Australia is concerned, the possibilities of social commercial advantages from the services are admittedly great, and urges that it would be a mistake to discontinue the service for the sake of avoiding a small annual payment. What Australia chiefly requirs is intercourse with Canada and this is only a question of time, for if New Zealand transfers the San Francisco mail service subsidy to a direct service another contract for an American service might be signed, though it would probably be the last. The article further suggests that the subsidy for the 'Frisco Service should be borne proportionately by all the Australian colonies. On the arrival of the steamer Wakatipu it was discovered that Gasparini, the escapee from New Caledonia, who was sent from Wellington in charge of Detective Walker, of Auckland, was missing;. The cause of his disappearance remains a mystery, and it is not known whether he jumped overboard from the vessel.
