Auckland, August 12. Last night, during the passage of the steamer lona from Mercury Bay to Auckland, and when the vessel was about ten miles out, a passenger named Geo Connor fell overboard, and was lost.
Wanganui, August 12. A Maori named Tere Penii, jußt released from Wellington gaol, where he had been serving a sentence of three years for horaa stealing m this district, took it into his head to jump through a storekeeper's window about half-past 10 lest night. In his mad leap he cnt himself considerably, and smashed orookery and fixtures m all directions. The store - keeper attempted to seiza him, but the Maori threatened to brain him with a saucepan. Finally several people came to (he assistance of the storekeeper, and the Maori was overpowered, bound with ropea, and conveyed to the police station. John Ellis, compositor, v recent arrival from Auckland, made a savage attack upon the landlady of the Custom House hotel with a fireahovel. Cooper, boarding* house keeper, on interfering, was also assaulted and out on the head. Ellis was arrested and taken to the look-up, Wellington, August 12.
