THE WEATHER

The rain ceased early on Sunday evenIng, after an almost incessant downpour of four days. Yesterday large tracts of land m the district were under water, but with the cessation of the rain the water began to steadily disappear. The river was m heavy flood on Saturday night, the water being within a few inches of the height of the flood of July last yeari At Wakanui the water overflowed the temporary embankment m one or two plac9B, but the volume which found its way across was not great. A quantity of silt was deposited on Mr S, Brown's land, but generally speaking no damage of any consequence was done.

One of the groins near the Old Men's Home was swept away, but all the other protection works of the Borough Council have satisfactorily Btood the teat impoied on them.

The express on Saturday night was two hours late, the delay being occasioned by some of the piles In the Pareora bridge washing out, and thus preventing trains crossing.

On Saturday matters on the Otago lines were m a serious condition. On the Taieti plain the line was m some places under water to the depth of four feet, and great damage was done to the embankments; An attempt was made to transfer the passengers who went south by the 4.20 train and those coming north by the express by means of coacheß from Moegiel to Greytown, but as there was five feet of water oa the main road near Qreytpwn, the ooaches had to go, baok. The Taieri river overflowed its banks, and spreading over the plains, caused considerable damage. Farmers were busy all Friday night and Saturday moruing removing Btock to high grounds. On Sunday the Taieri river commenced to go down rapidly, and the wqret is therefore over.

In the Northern district the rain was very heavy. At Flaxton all the houses except one or two were flooded by an overflow of the main drain.
