The iron barque, K\te Tatham, bjand from Nawoaitle to Nap'er, with a cargo of coal, was wrecked at Wb'io Bluff about two and a-half miles frrm Wairau Kiver, Blenheim. last night. In appears that the vessel waß beating aoro.s the Straits *ith a fresh south-east brer z ) and a high sea and swell, when she got too close m before observing the land, whloh was obsoured by thiok weather, B ifore anything could be done to work the ship out of her dangerous position ehe struck the rooks and remained fast. It waa about 6 o'oluok last evening when the vessel first struck, and the crew were at onde employed m lightening the vessel with • view to getting her oS, Rookets were fied co.as to attract the attention of passing vessels, and theaa were seen about 8 o'clock by the Union Company's steamor Kvnlerl while oroßfling the Wairau bar on her way to Wellington. Captain Manning at once went to *he aß?tatance of the ill-fated barque, and remained by her all night. The sea somewhat moderated after the veßßel went on, and the work o f discharging the coal was carried on through ■ out the night despite the faot that she was laboring rather heavily. At 4 o'olock this mcrnlng the K«nieri had a line taken on board, and an attempt was made to tow the veßsel off without suooess. Between seven and eight the Wathl also came to the asafntaaoe of the barque, and along with the Kanieri, farther attempts were made to move the vessel, and although they tugged for hours it had no effect. About 9 o'clock m the morning the Bhip's pumps were sounded, and it was ascertained that there was two feet of water In her hold, and by 10 o'clock it had risen above the cargo. As there was no ohance of the vessel coming off, the captain of the Kanieri decided to resume hla voyage to Wellington, and Mr Edward O'Brien, the chief officer, and five other members of the rtiw of the Kite Tat ham, came over In her. The oaptain, boatswain, and one of the seamen were left on the wreck, and should the vessel show signs of breaking up they will land In one of the ship's boa's. The vessel lies on a very rough bottom, and the ohief officer oonslders that she will btoorae a total wreck, but states that a large qaantlty of gear ambe saved if steps are at ones taken to dismantle the ship All the personal effects of the crew were plaoad on the Kanlerl this morning, and brought on to Wellington. The K»te Tatham is a small barque of 275 tons, is 25 years old, and owned by Messrs Tait and Mills of Napier „ It is understood that both the vessel and cargo are insured.
