MELBOURNE EXHIBITION.
The Prince of Wales sent a telegram upon the opening of the Exhibition. Members of Parliament entertained distinguished visitors at a banquet on Saturday night. Five hundred guests were present. Admiral Fairfax m the course of his speech on colonial defences said the final arrangement is that the Imperial Government should provide fast cruisers and torpedo vessels at a cost of .£BOO,OOO, the colonies paying a maximum sum of yearly for the maintenance, and a per centage on the capital sum expended. Sir W. Jervois will leave for New Zealand on Wednesday. The attendance at the Exhibition on ' Saturday was 13,000.
