ASHBURTON LIVE STOCK MARKET
Mr D. Thomas, late of Matson Cox and Co, reports upon the live stook market m the Ashburton distriot for the week ending August 2nd as follows : —
On Tuesday at the Tinwald Yar^B I held my usual weekly sale of sheep, oa.ttle, and pigs, but owing to various oauses the oatalogue of live atook submitted waa an exceedingly sma'l one, only about 750 sh cap putting man appearance. The attendano eof buyera was good, resulting m a olearanoe of sheep at a riae of from 6d to Is per head,, cattle and pigs ruling about the same as la'at week. My prinoipal salea were 45 fat oroaa'ored ewea and wethera mixed 10a 4d; 45 d.o do 10s; 14 culls, fa ld ; 37 Southdown Oi-toothß mixed, lis 2d ; 216 2-tooth orossbr'id wethers, 13a ; 263 sound mouth merino ewe.' j, 5a 6d. Ia oattie 2 springers, £5 138 6d ea-jh ; 4 fat heifera £4 15s; 2do do £412a6,d; 2at £4. Old cows, £2 ; eto., eto. In jjigs I had none on offer, but I notioed a ni,ce line of porkers which realized 23a eaoh.
During the week I have disposed of privately several lines of fat sheejp for shipment, also 320 orossbred ewes m lamb, 9s 9d ; 500 crossbred do do 10a 3d ; 26,0 merino ewes 5s 8d and 891 crossbred 2-tootha mixed fair condition, lis ld. I have to report plenty of demand for sheep of the right description. On Friday 27th nit. I held my uaual fortnightly sale of Bheejp skins, fat, hides, eto. I Buooeeded m olearing the whole of my oatalogue at prioes p_b follows : — Green crossbred skins, 8b 9d to 4s 9d ; seoond quality, 2a 9d, 3a to 3s 7d ; best merinos, 3s 6d to 4a 2d ; seoond quality, 2s 9d, 3a, to 3s sd ; bides 3d per lb all round ; fat l&d per lb, being the first legitimate sale of hides and fat ever made m the distriot.
In grain a more buoyant tone is exhibited beoause of the very satisfactory news cabled lately from England .and Sydney. Wheat m the former (owing to wet harvest and other causes) has risen considerably, whilst m Sydney oats are beooming better property every day.
Properties —Very little can be reported on tbis head as the desirable class of land is not largely m the market, but when any suoh ia for sale at reasonable values it is eagerly snapped up, thus demonstrating that purchasers are prepared to buy good land at legitimate values.
