Auckland, August 2. Messrs Ewlngton and Stevennon, the official visitors to the Auckland Lunatic Asylum, paid one of their formal visits of inspection yesterday. In their report they stato that the maintenance arrears tot up to £841 17?, and add that the State is being shamefully imposed upon by being made to bear this m addition ta the support of 338 purely pnuper lunatica. There are m the Asylum fifteen criminal lunatics, who ought not, m the opinion of the official visitors, to be kept along with other hv mates, because some of them are dangeroua, but there 1b no present hope of separate wards for them. Of 368 inmates of the Asylum, only seven males and fivo females are deemed to be curable. The report further states that probationary wards are much needed at tho Asylum. ISELSON, AugUßt 2. Early this morniog a very heavy easterly gale was experienced, and from the previous evening rain fell at intervals, but bo considerable was the downpour that the rivers wore flooded to-day; At Foxhill the Waiti has now carried away bolh ap proaches to tho cart bridge, and the West Oonst coach is unable to come m. At Brightwater large logs and Boine sheep were Bern going down the Waiti m the flood Before the rain thero was much snow on the hills, It is feared that damago may have been done m the Upper Motueka, but no reports are m.
Greymouxh, AugUßt 1, Quite a lively shock of earthquake was felt at 20 minutes to 11 this evening. The direotion was north and south, and the duration about 10 seconds. It was felt all over the town, but more sharply m the upper stories.
Another very sharp Bhock of earthquake was felt about 3 o'clock this morning.
Hokitika, August 2. A Bhook of earthquake, the most severe experienced here for many yeare, was felt throughout the district at 20 minutes to 11 last night. The diteotion was southwest to north-east. It lasted 25 seconds.
A man named Gilbert, a Beofton minor, died suddenly at Kuinara. He waß found dead m bed. The cause is unknown. He was much respected throughout the district,

The English underwriters of the ship Lyttelton have instructed their solicitors to carry their action againßt the Titnaru Harbor Board, for damagoa for loss of the vessel, from the Court of Appeal to the Privy Council.
Dunbdik, August 2. The Dock Trust have received no inti - mation as to whether thoir loan has been floated or failed m London. The Chairman said he could not understand the Hon R Campbell's aotion, as he had been a supporter ,of the Dock Trust ' Bill. As showing the neoeasity for a dock ho said t'io Fifeshire and other steamers would have been dookpd hereof a larger one had been oopotruoied.
