Tbe matoh between tbe Native footballers and Canterbury this afternoon was played m the presence of about 3000 persona, and ended In favor of the Natives by a gaol and two tries (5 points) to a gaol and a try (4 points). There was a freßh eaaterly bieeza blowing which Canterbury had the advantage of In the firtt spell, but notwithstanding this they bad the worst of the game, their opponents playing better together and with greater freedom. Tho Canterbury forwards did not seem able to hold them, consequently the local backa had not muoh to do beyond stopping Individual rushes and making a klok now and again. About three minutes after the klok off tilllson took the ball from ton oh close to the Canterbury gaol and went over the line. W. Wynsvard took the kick at gaol, but failed. Now and again Oanterbury got on some fine combined ruihes, and the result of these was that Oreeawel), bad a couple of shots at gaol, one goiug unpleasantly near.. Before the spall ended a Oanterbury rash sent the ball to the Native full basks who mulled it, and Dow fell on it clone to the gaol posts. Fuller kicked a gaol from the place
The second apell waa decidedly m favor of the local team who pat m some splendid work, bu y , on three ocoiaions the visitors broke through, and G, za and Elliott eaoh secured a try. From that of the latter Ellison kicked a gaol. Madlgao also got over the line aud had a maul with Broughton and Fuller, who rolled him m the field. The result of Bterling forward play, good backing up, and weH-direoted passing on the part of Canterbury ended m Fuller gaining a second try. He took the ktok himself, a long one, and made a splendid attempt, the ball going to tbe side of the post. This was gained a fow minutes before the close of the spell. Canterbury played a man Bhorfc all the aeoond spell, Adcook having one of his ribs severely hurt
