LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
Wednesday, July 18. The Counoil met at 2.30 p ra. subsidies to local bodies. Dr Pollen moved that jn the opinion of the Council it is not advisable, m view of the financial oondition and obligations of the colony, that any portion of the publio revenue derived from Customs Duties should be appropriated or set apart per - manently or for a definite period to provide subsidies for local bodies. He contended that the present system encouraged extravagance on the part of local bodies. The debate was adjourned. . eDSTOMS AND EXCISE DUTIES BILL The Council concurred m the amendments made In the Caatoma and Excite Duties Bill, Several oth^r Bills were dealt with. The Council rose at 4 p.m.
