AUCKLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

(PKU P«EB3 ASSOQIATION.J

Auckland, July 11. The Aaokland Chamber of Oorameroß held their annual meeting to-day. The annual report of the Council dealt with a great number of subjects of Importance to trade and oomtnorce. Surprise was expressed In the report that any opposition oould be raised to the San l?ranclaoo mall aervlce, whloh was aelkiupportlng, but tho Counoll had reason to believe that the route would be still oontluued, and arrangements made whereby the Beivioe would be rendered even more efficient. The crude and discreditable manner iv which the North Island Trunk Railway had been attempted to be carried out waa ooitainty a great blot upon the Government's administrative abilities. Muoh of the money voted for the lino had been frittered away on other works, and unless pressure were brought' to b£&r .do the Government the apathy which had beep a'hown would continue, yhe Oouncjl would, now take every a(ep to further the completion of the work. There seemed bat little hope of a redaotion being made In the present extravagant expenditure upon education. Attention had been called m last year's report to useless expenditure upon tho Universities and salaried of ho many profcaaora, and the Oouno'l were etill of opinion that one Uniyerpjty for the oolony, and oonnequefatly one ata# of grofesipre, would fully satitfy all requirements of atqdenta for tho present, and were also of opinion that a large saving conld be effected by raising tho school age, a proceeding moat desirable m the present state of tho finances of the colony, The desirabloneaß of mote efficient cable jpommunt^atipn with Europe was mentioned, emcT the Council drew attention to the steady Increase <jf tra*do with tho Paoifio I.lftDdn.

The President, m moving the adoption of the report, delivered a long address and urged the Chamber to exert thorneelvea agalnat the eflorta now being made to connect Wellington by railway with the coastal ports of the Iforth, Island, trade being thua taken from Auckland. Aftijr BO&o disouaelcn, the report ""was adopted, with the ejfpop^on of tb&t p*rt referring ta education. Mr' «jT. Ijfaohaitjan wao elected President for th'o ensuing year.
