Writing is very puzzling to savagea. In Bonth Amerioa, on one occasion, a native was sent by a missionary to a friend with a note and four loaves of bread. The native ate one on the way, and was amazed to find that the note disclosed his theft. On the next occasion that he was Bent with four loaves, he sat on the note while eating one of them. H On February 22nd the long looked-for opening of the Panama Canal through the Mmdi Hill, four miles from Colon, was finally accomplished. There is now a continuous waterway open from the sea at Colon to a point near Bojio station, on the Panama railroad, with a depth sufficient to float a 1000 ton vesqel, The length of the oaoal now finished is 12 miles. Babbit preserving appears to have met with greater suaoess m Marlborough than at Wood, villein Southland. The Marlborough works at present employ 54 hands and pay about jL'SOO weekly Su -vragoi*. Work has been found for several men. Any man not presenting himself when employment ie found js considered a bad case, and is debarred from receiving further assistance.
It is satisfactory to note that, notwithstanding the general slackness of trade, the oargo
traffic to and from Sydney and Melbourne has not been more brisk for some time than it is at presept. The Manapouri, which left Wellington for Sydney, via IJortjjern ports, was obliged to refuse over 100 tons cargo, and for several weeks past the oargo carrying accommodation of the steamers trading to Sydney and Melbourne have not been equal to the traffic
The refusal of the Hampstead Town Board to pay the expenses inourred by the Fire Brigade jo attending fires m their district? has drawn from tjbe "Borough Council a unanimous determinatipn that unless some arrangement as to these expenses i& come to the Brigade will not m future attend fires m Hampstead. It is not unlikely that the Counoil will oall upon the neighboring local bodies to bear Borne share of the maintenance of the Brigade.
