MAKING WORK FOX THEMSELVES,
Only the other day and after much pressing, the Bailway Department thought fit to lay out m a more civilised manner the unsightly railway reserve running through the horough. The land was fenced off and trees planted. No thought was taken that .evergreen trees when they grew up would keep East street very damp m the winter time, and when this was pointed ou.t the workmen were, after a week's time, sent to root out all the trees already planted and put m others. Surely a little thought on tbo part of those who are responsible for these things would have prevented such a ludicious sight as has been witnessed here. One week a gang of men are busy planting trees and next week they are rooting them up. Even now they have brought the trees too close to the street, and perhaps the next move will be to reverse the order and clear away all traces of possible improvement. Truly the Kailway Department has much to answer for.
