THE BOROUGH WATER SUPPLY.
Now that the subject of a water supply for Ashburton 1b attracting some attention the details of the following Boheme, whioh wbb published some years ago, will very likely be read with Interest. As will be seen the scheme was drawn up previous to the construction of the ornamental lake m the demaln. The author says:- — I propose to bring In a head of water from Saunders' mill' race to some part of the Oomain, the position Is of very little consequence ; to sink a well or drive a 4 or 6 inch pipe to such a depth as will Intercept the nnderfhw whioh is known to exist, to ereat a turbina wheel of s*y — horae power, the same to be driven by the water from' the mill race j and attaon a doable aotion force pump. In place of constructing an expensive reservoir at a great elevation, I propose to discharge the water from the pumps into a large airtight chamber whioh will aot as an accumulator : (An ordinary steam boiler with a pressure gauge, and safety valve would answer/ and connect the mains to that, and the compressed air will effeotually nfcilfza the power of the turbine for supplying water at a sufficiently high presauce to command any building m the township. The waste water from the turbine could then at trifling expense be used for flashing the streets and for forming an ornamental pond In the Domain I olaim for this eoheme the following advantages, Ist. Its eoonomy, the oast not being estimated ttt more than £— — 2nd. Its practicability, the simplicity of it being patent to any person; 3rd. Is eoonomy la working, as after I being completed it will require no attention.
4b. The short period of time necessary to complete it ; the whole of the work could be done in^as than 3 months. sth The ease and rapidity with Which it could be stopped or started m case It was necessary m time of flood to stop, or of fire to start it. 6th. The oertalnty of having a sever falling supply of the pnrest water for domestic purposes capable of being delivered at any required elevation. 7th. The ornamentation of the Domain by having a email lake In plaoe of the present unsightly gully.
