The wife of Lieutenant Talcke, who has lived on the Congo about a year, has just returned to Belgium m excellent health. The only white women who is m the depths of Central Africa, hundreds of miles from the coast, is Mrs Bore, of the London Missionary Sooiety, a black-eyed, sweet.faoed young woman, who was carried 800 miles to Lake Tanganyika m a bath chair, The fortnightly meeting of the Band of Hope m connection with the Tinwald Wesleyan Sunday School was held on Wednesday evening. The annual dinner m oonneotion with the Star of Ashburton, L.O L., will be held m tbs Orange Hall, on Thursday next, at 7.30 p.m. A heavy gale sprung up just before 2 o'olook this [afternoon and for some time clouds of dust were flying about, making outdoor travelling anything but pleasant. One or two windows were broken by the force of the wind, A homely French Abbe, who had jast inherited £64,000, has presented his fortune to the Pope, stating that hitherto he had lived on £12 a month, and thus he would not know what to do with so muoh. In return, however, he asks His Holiness to support him if he wantß assistance at any future time — which the Pope will, of course. The firebell rang out an alarm at 2.30 this afternoon,^ and m view of the furious gale that waß raging at the time considerable consternation arose. The Brigade turned out with great promptness and proceeded m the direotion \ol the racecourse. The fire being at_ Mr Kilworth'e place, near the Canterbury Millß. Mr Kilworth being engine driver there, As soon as the alarm was given the mills were shut down, and the whole staff taming out with buckets tha fire as confined to a detached wash-house and scullery, with an upper story used by Mr Kilworth as a workshop, m whioh he had a lot of valuable tools. The whole building and its contents were destroyed, and it is not known ff any insurance was on the building or its contents. It is supposed that a spark from the kitohen chimney oaused the file.
