HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
The House met at 2.30 p.m. QUESTIONS. Mr Walker asked the Minister of Lands whether, m consideration of the unaocoiintable outbreak of scab m the North [ of the colony and the apparent inability 1 of the Sheep Department to stifla the disease known as scab m the North or South Wands, he is prepared to submit to the Rabbit or Stock Committee the queaof the *e- organisation of the Sheep Department. Mr Richardson did not think thera was occasion for any exceptional action m this case, as the outbreak was conGoed to on'y ' a small portion. At the same time he should be glad to accept suggestions from the Stock Committee . Replying to other questions it was stated that it waß unnecessary to have the prices printed on railway tickets, as they were posted up at nil railway stations ; that charters of clubs should not be cancelled unices a breaoh of the law were proved, bub that it. was not proposed to renew charters of olnba which held the ; r meetings m hotels ; th« Government did not propose to raise any further taxation by a bachelor tax at present ; that It was not proposed to iatroduoa a Bill to regulate the distillation of spirits within the colony; that Government was not neglectful of ths recent case of illegal Baallng at the Auckland Islands, but it would not be wise to dlßolose the steps taken ; that steps vroald be taken after receiving a reply from Australian ports, to plaoe a lighthouse on one of the Auckland Islands, also to bring the Macquarrie Islands under the jurisdiction of New Zealand ; that the expediency of spending a reasonable sum m opening; up a coach road from Mosaburn to Manapouri and Te Ann Lakes, with a view to making the district? accessible and attractive to tourists and excursionists, was receiving consideration ; that there was no truth m the rumor that Colonel Trimble, Mr Wright, and Mr Nloholla were to be appointed Railway Commissioners ; that Resident Magistrates Court bailiffs were not appointed by Government, but by the Magistrates, and that if any cases were brought before the Government where bailiffs interfered at elections steps would be taken to prevent it ; that if the judgment g^ven yesterday m Christchurch by Mr Justice Ward (that it must be shown that sheep are actually and not merely technically scabby) were correct, it was clear that an. amendment of the Sheep Act was necessary. The Houae rose at 5.30 p.m.
