THE LATE BOROUGH CLERK AND ENGINEER.

10 THE EDITOH. Bin, — I notice that the Borough Council at their last meeting passed a resolution to the effect that Mr Braddell, the retiring Town Olerk, be paid a bonus of £50 m recognition ot past services. As this is likely to mislead tho ratepayers, and as I acted for Mr Braddell m the matter (though I may mention he is not a party to this letter), I beg most emphatically to deny that any bonus whatever has been paid to him. The Council, it is true, handed Ms Braddell a cheque for £80, but that amount was paid as compensation for wrongful dismissal. Not as a bonus. After giving Mr Braddell one month's notioe of dismissal tho Council discovered that he did not consider that sufficient, and intended taking action against them to reoover damages for wrongful dismissal, they then offered to compromise the matter by paying £80 m full settlement of all claims, which Mr Braddell agreed to accept. Whether the Council intend paying Mr Braddell a further sum of £50 aa a bonus, or whether the above resolution whs passed with a view of satisfying the requirements of the audit department I am not m a position to say. I might mention that all these unnecessary payments are inoluded in'the Council's "retrenchment^ policy which I understand has already cost them about £150. — I am, etc., B. M. CUTHBEBTSON.
