(per pkbss association.) ■; Auckland, Jane 28. A charge of arson brought against Alex. Duncan, In conneotfon with the burning of a Bhed at Kohimarama School-ground, was heard at the Police Court today, and dismissed. The enquiry into the loss of the man James Shaw, from the schooner L'szle Guy, on the voyage from Oamaru to Auckland, was held at the R.M. Oonefc yesterday before Dr Giles, 8.M., and Captain Frater, by whom it was decided that the occurrence was accidental. The will of Dr Elam, an old Auckland settler, who died on Monday last, deoUrea that when two annual annuities and a legacy have been provided for, the residue of his property Bhall be realised for the purpose of founding a permanent Sohool of Art and DaslgD, to ba established m the olty of Auokland. The school Is to known as the Elam School of Art and Design It la provided that the annual Interest from the realised residue of the estate Bhall be spent m the maintenance of such a sohool, to provide teaohers, etc*, pay rent of neoeasary premises In whloh art teaching shall be oarried on until suoh time as a permanent building for the purpote Is provided. The exact amount of the estate has not yet boen ascertained, bnt It Is considered probably that from £7000 to £10,000 will be realised for the benefit of the proposed Sohool of Art and Design, .Blenheim, Jone 28. Word has just been reoaived that the Mahikipawa [Mahakipawa] diggings near Havelock, have been proclaimed and that a sum has been placed on the Estimates for sar?ey and formation of a road. The diggings . are m a gully whloh is hardly, accessible, ChbißlO£tuboh, Jane 88 Unsuccessful attempts were made early this morning to burn the suburban polios stations at Phillipstown and Woolston, At the first station gorse and dry sticks were "put under the building and set on fire about 5 o'clock. At Woolston a fire of gorse sticks and coal was lighted against the lockup about 3.20 o'clock. Larrikiniem has been prevalent m both districts lately, Neither station is seriously damaged.
