THE SEVERED LEG
♦ A Christchuroh paper says that on Thursday a resident of New Brighton informed Inspector Pender that he had m the morning fonnd a man's leg on the beach about four milea to the northward of the township. It had a boot on, and had apparently been m the water for some little time. The Inspector went to New Brighton, and sent on Constable Cleary with a trap o fetch down the limb. A rumor waa started m New Brighton that the owner of the limb was tha escaped convict Roberts, Borne persons saying they had seen a light on tht sea outside the breakers, opposite New Brighton, a few nights after the escape was made. From particulars given to him by the finder of the limb, Inspector Pender thinks it has been m the water too long to be one of Roberts', and moreover, that it is not large enough.
