Sydney, June 7. Professor Black, of the Otago University, has accepted the Presidency of the chemistry and mineralogy section of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science. A scheme of military defence is about to be submitted to Parliament which includes such a complete system of submarine defence that it is believed it will be absolutely impossible for hostile vessels to gain entrance to the harbor. The men who brought the charge against the captain of the Vernon have left town. They applied to the ship inasler for discharges, fearing they ijrould sjiare the same fate as the victim should they again go to sea m the vessel. Jn the House this afternoon the Premier delivered a statement of the course government intended to pursue, ■f be Land $ill was to be dismissed for tjiis session. The Land Property Ta x pill will be proceeded with, and the Chinese Restriction Bill would be dealt with to completion. Amended standing orders were to be introduced, He stated that the deficit of New South Wales bad not increased one shilling since the Government took office. The deficit stands now at £2,630,000, and the Treasurer at once introduced a Bill providing for its extinction. He proposes to pay off a quarter of a million annually for ten years, payments to be ! made every six months.
