THE TARIFF.
+ , — (per press association ) Auckland, June 6. The Chamber of Commerce mot to-day to consider the tariff proposals. After some dlaoutßlon, a motion was proposed to the effeci tbat the Chamber view the proposals with alarm, and recommend further retrenchment m the publ'o expenditure. To this an amendment was suggested, approving of the tariff recommendations with the exception of the primage duty ; and another amendment was proposed to the effoot ih;it the Chamber agree m toto with the Budget proposals. Eventually the meeting was adjourned without any resolutions being corns to, Wellington, June 6. At a meeting of the Industrial Protection League, a resolution waa carried — " That the tariff proposals of the Government are on the whole satisfactory. That the Inorease of duties will m various instances create new .Industries and give suoh an impetus to those now m existence an will go far to counterbalance the taxation the colony must bear if its credit is to be raiintalnecV'
