UNITED CANTERBURY COURSING CLUB'S MEETING

Judge : R. Cress well. Slipper: J, Earushaw, ; The first meeting, under the auspices of the United Canterbury Coursing Oiab, took plaoe at Lagmhor yesterday. The weather was splendid, and the attendance large, Beveral ladies being present, and Nertbern and Southern sportsmen represented. Hares were very soarce, and were m most instances extremely wild, bo that a good proportion of those raised, could not b 9 availed of. Indeed, at one portion of the day it seemed j improbable that the first round of the Puppy Stakes would be got off; however, late m the afternoon a paddock was beaten m whioh » few hares were found thus enabling the first ronnd of the Stakes and a couple of oourses m the Cup to be got off before dark. Pubb ran very strongly, and m only one or two cisea was a kill recorded. Mr Creeswell filled the office of Judge with satisfaction to ali. In the abßeooe of Mr W. Zander Mr G. Bisaet, although barely recovered from a severe attack of indisposition, performed the multifarious duties pertaining to the Secretaryship with great credit to himself. Mr J. Earnshaw, as slipper, had a billet which must have been fatigulcg, and from the time the first dogs were slipped till he was relieved by J. Porter when the afternoon bad far advanoed, he must have covered a good many miles of ground. Mr J. Henry, of the Oomercial Hotel, had a supply of refreshments on the ground, and was well patronized. The runnlog. — Yara, though lame, hsd two lengths the best of the race to tbe hare, and showing strong superiority m working to Blue Bell winning with a good | deal to spare. Hereford was three lengths faster to the hare than King William and soored the first two. The subsequent I work was pretty equally shared till the hare escaped, leaving the black the winner Bonnie Black Besa was favored by a 1 circling hare and led Daisy up by two lengths, going on m possession for a long soore. Daiay got m jast before the hare reached the fence, but puss escaping, Blaok Bess waa left with a Urge majority. Kimberley was faster m the early portion of the run-up than Mother Hubbard, bat very quickly died away, being beaten by the latter m a very hollow manner. College Boy showed great pace m the early part of the course, doing almost the whole of the scoring. Belfiold then had the hare to himself, bnt failed to equalise matters befor6 puts got away. Highland Lass end Raven ran three uodeaidode, and were given a spell before they wero sent away m real earnest, R«ven proving himself the superior m a moderate courße, Barrister was best all the way m the course with Bonnie Laddie, and Avonbelle proved herself the superior m that with Lone Jack, a course m which m each turn was unsighted, Oantbbbuby Cup, for 18 all-agea. Winner £30, ranner-np £10, third dog £5, two doga £2 lOi each. First Round. Mr B. Bayley's w b Hnow, by Ballarat Coleen, beat Mr P.. M'Avoy'a f d Belfast, by Taraban— Misa Ridley. Mr D. M. Roaa' t b Clan ua Gael, beat Mr T Alexander's bd b Bonnie Jean, by Sir Ridley — Bonnie Sootland. Mr G. W. Welsdon'a r d Joe Brown, by Liberator— Vivette, beat Mr T R. Junes' w r d Concrete, by Musket — Flora. Belfast led up to puea and ecored three times. Snow then shot past and monopolised the hard for the rest of the course, winning with a lot to spare. Oltn-na gbol lod Bonnie Jean up and scored throe. Exchanges took plsoot, ond Bonnie Jean flicked the hare. Farther exchanges took place to the fence where the bare was lost. Joe Brown drew right away from Concrete and maintained hla lead almost throughout a fast course. Agent and Fownhopo wore 'put In the slip*, but no hare was found before darknosn'carc.o on, and no course took place.
